Autoplay sucks because its just plain rude. Its like the people who aggressively sell cell phones and credit cards from kiosks in the shopping mall. They walk up to you, interrupt what you’re doing and just start trying to engage you. Its a violation of your personal space. We don’t expect that from strangers.

The same logic applies to video/audio that autoplays without user input. Interacting with software is an example of shared agency between the user and the system. The user makes requests, and the user responds. When the system responds without a request from the user its very off putting. From a design standpoint, its tantamount to breaking faith with the user.

“I made up my mind…that I would never try to reform man—that’s much too difficult…What I would do was to try to modify the environment in such a way as to get man moving in preferred directions.” Buckminster Fuller

“I don’t care how gorgeous the thing you made was, if that’s your answer, I’m not gonna hire you. It’s not enough to make pretty things. You’ve got to be able to talk about them, to present them, to parse their meaning. And the truth of it is that if you can’t articulate what the thing you’re making means, you’re gonna have a helluva time making it mean something to someone else. Which is a problem, because that’s the job.” Designing by writing (or The non-iterative design process) | tiny gigantic

“We created the Kiva API because we know the idea of Kiva is bigger than any number of people we can sit in our offices or send into the field. Our website has already done so much to connect people and bring new opportunity to the developing world, but it is nothing compared to the impact we think that technology and microfinance together will have to alleviate poverty.” From ‘Introducing the Kiva API’
